What is Snoring?
Snoring occurs when the air passageways are obstructed. As you sleep, the muscles in the throat relax, causing the tongue to fall backward. This narrows and softens the throat, and when you breathe, it causes vibrations in the throat walls, resulting in the loud, unpleasant sound of snoring. This typically happens when inhaling but can also occur to a lesser extent during exhalation.
In some cases, the throat walls collapse completely, blocking the airways and causing a condition known as sleep apnea. This results in the complete cessation of breathing. Sleep apnea can be serious and may require medical intervention, especially if it’s severe.

When to Talk to Your Doctor?
If you snore and experience any of the following signs or symptoms, you should consult with a sleep specialist:
- Morning headaches
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Recent weight gain
- Waking up feeling confused during the night
- Not feeling rested upon waking
- Changes in concentration, attention, or memory
- Pauses in breathing during sleep (which your partner may notice more than you)
If your doctor determines that your snoring isn’t linked to a more serious issue, they may recommend an oral appliance.

Causes of Snoring
For those who suffer from this condition, it is near impossible to go through the full cycle of a restful sleep. There are four stages of sleep, and each one is necessary to achieve a full night’s rest.
The four stages of the sleep cycle are:
Transition – about 5% of the total cycle.
Light – about 45% of the cycle.
Deep – about 25% of the cycle. This is when the body heals itself and many important reparative functions occur. People who don’t enter the deep cycle will be tired the next day.
REM – Rapid Eye Movement – about 25% of the cycle. This is when most memorable dreams occur. People who don’t complete a full REM cycle tend to complain that they are tired and find it difficult to concentrate.
